2014 Aleutian Islands earthquake

One of the most devastating earthquakes to have hit America in the last decade would be 2014 Aleutian Islands earthquake. On the 23rd of june a moment magnitude of 7.9 of a moment earthquake could be felt by all those on the Island, destroying homes and lives. The earthquakes effect did not end with a few vibrations but instead lead to dozens of aftershocks, under seaquakes and small tsunamis. The tsunami warning covered coastal areas from Nikolski to Attu at the western end of the Aleutian island chain.

The Oblique slip earthquake struck at 20:53:09 and had a depth of about 107.5 kilometres, felt mostly in Adak. Fortunately, many people were provided with information on earthquake and tsunami watches, advisories or warnings. The earthquake was caused when a proportion of the Pacific plate attempting to plunge into the earth’s interior was suddenly let free causing several minutes of destruction. This happened since the Pacific Plate moves northward and subducts beneath the North American plate at 59 millimetres a year. The Aleutians is a chain of 14 large volcanic islands and 57 smaller ones, about 1931.2128 kilometres across the northern Pacific Ocean between the Alaska mainland and eastern Russia
